Filipino Bishops

I am reminded of Blessed John-Paul II's words, "The history of our times has shown in a tragic way the danger which results from forgetting the truth about the human person." (Respect for Human Rights: the Secret of True Peace).

Recently I read about the present debate in the Filipino legislature concerning the legal use of contraceptions from Michael Voris' Votex (February 25, 2011) (realcatholictv.com). There is strong opposition against this bill from the Filipino Catholic Bishops. The National Council of Churches in the Philippines (composed primarily of Protestant leaders) supports the legislation. Of course mainline Protestant Churches usually, though not all of their members, support contraceptions and abortion. Bishop Marion Inong of the Untied Church of Christ in the Philippines, however, stated, "We leave to individual members the right to choose how to plan their families. This means they can apply modern or natural family planning methods, but we are definitely against abortion."  (http://www.eni.ch/featrued/article.php?id=1700) Bishop Marion seems to be quite naive of the domino effects of contraception. The next step is legalizing abortion. This has happened in the United States. And with mainline Protestant religions now supporting abortion, it seems that in the future when abortion comes to the Filipino lawmakers, Bishop Marion will most likely retract his statement.

What seems to be happening in the Philippines is the same steps towards legalizing abortion as happened in the United States. Contraceptions was first initiated as a discriminatory practice against minorities and the socially marginalized, to diminish their population. In the domino effect, from contraception's the United States lawmakers moved forward to abortion, (Remember Roe vs. Wade in 1973) and now people are willing to choose killing a child if he/she is born with a birth or mental defect. We disguise charity for our own selfish purposes. Supporters of contraception state that these practices are humane for the welfare of families and society. This is simply a matter of a "culture of death" wearing a friendly mask of concern for families and the quality of life.

As is expected, Planned Parenthood set its feet on the shores of the Philippines, and of course, supports the legislation with its anti-life agenda. For the Filipino lawmakers, it might be hard to refuse the attractive benefits of money coming their way in the shape of money, celebrity support and United Nations pressure in favor of contraceptions.

I admire how the Filipino Catholic Bishops are speaking strongly speaking out against the legislation. Some have even vowed to go to prison if this bill becomes law. Interesting, most of the United States Bishops are quite silent on the issue of contraception. They do not wish to offend those Catholics who choose to go against Church teaching in her defense of human life.

Presently, there are pro-life lecture series in the Philippines against the legislation. Let us pray the Filipinos will take heed of God's words. "Choose Life!" --Brother Warren Perrotto, MSC
