Advent

Be Watchful! Be Alert!

Today we begin the season of Advent, the season of waiting, of expectation, of longing, of hope for the coming of the One: God Himself. The waiting, expectation, and the longing is as old as humanity itself. It has been building up since God expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. the yearning for this appearance wells from the depths of the void in each person's heart.

Then He appeared. There was no fanfare, not fireworks, no cheers, and no huge television screens. In fact, his arrival was so ordinary, people missed it altogether. It was visible only to those who were watchful, only to those who were alert: two young housewives named Mary and Elizabeth, a carpenter named Joseph, poor shepherds on a hill and three aliens. Only they saw and recognized the baby Jesus as God and worshipped Him.

Will I recognize him this Christmas and worship him? When he comes, will he find me watchful and alert? --Fr. Simione Volavola, MSC
