June 19-21, the first MSC National Lay Members Gathering was held at Our Lady of Solitude Parish in Palm Springs. The three-day conference includied witness talks by lay members on how the MSC were influential in their lives and the experiences with the MSC which motivated them to become lay members. Members of the International Committee of lay members, Rita Cleuren, LMSC (from Belgium) and Hannie Jansen, LMSC (Netherlands) were also present and gave a talk about their situation in Europe as well as their hopes and dreams. Lynn Ditlow, LMSC of the MSC Sisters gave a presentation on her trip to Jamaica, Carol Allred, LMSC of Texas, Grace Delgado, LMSC, and Mario Delgado, LMSC also shared an update of the lay members in Illinois and Texas, as well as their ministries. In one session Father Joe Jablonski, MSC led a discussion on how the lay members could help the Religious to obtain more vocations to the Consecrated Life. Fr. Ben Alforque, MSC also gave a brief discussion on the MSC vocation in relation to Social Justice. Lastly, Brother Warren Perrotto, MSC talked about the canonization process of our Founder, which included our martyrs and lay members during their orginal foundation. From the conference, there seemed to be four elements which began the process of becoming lay members: youth groups, Mexico mission trip through Su Misericordia (started by lay member Ana Gmeiner), the presence of the MSC charism and spirituality by the MSC in their pastoral activities, and Life's Healing Journey retreats. There were about 60 participants representing California, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Our sincere thanks and appreciation go to Danny and Ana Gmeiner, LMSCsand all those members who helped to make the gathering a success and a dream fulfilled. --Brother Warren Perrotto, MSC
